the HEIST resident DJs

hello, my name is..

hyphy crunk

Dj name and why?

Well, Funny story about my dj name, HYPHY CRUNK was givin to me by friends all based on how when I used to jump on and mess around on the turn tables at our old club "Mensa Lounge" i would get all HYPHY and jump around and into the crowd and most of the time i was wasted so that is why CRUNK came into the picture and then we put the two together HYPHY CRUNK when i first started djing at age 13 it was DJ PAC MAN, I really don't know whats worse! haha But glad its not something so serious!

What influenced you to become a Dj?

Well watching the djs play on DMC champion videos or watching the djs spin at partys my older brother frank was promoting at the time was a huge influence to see that one person can control over 5000 people with the choice of ones MUSIC selection was huge to me because I thought only singers or bands could do something like this but watching RICHARD VISION, BAD BOY BILL, DJ IRENE, MARK V AND POOGIE BEAR, that is what influenced me the most. When i was 12 my parents told my older brother Frank that he couldn't attend a party in a small Los Angeles city called Lynwood, unless I went with him.

After arriving at the party, the owner of the house revealed that the DJ hired to dj at the party was in a car accident on his way back to the party, but had left his records and his equipment.

After brainstorming with the home owner, and without thought, i suddenly said, "I know how to DJ. I can do it." Frank and the promoter immediately shot down the idea, but quickly changed their minds after watching him walk over to the equipment and strangely, begin to play music. A nervous, 12 year old I worked the crowd (as much as a novice could) for the next six hours without any break. As I left, I got a handful of cash and an enthusiastic, "We'll call you for the next party."
Then it started!

Who are your biggest influences?

I would have to say my biggest influences would have to have been my dad and my mom. No they were not djs haha but they raised me so clear and straight its because of them I do what i do today and they influenced me like crazy. But I can't forget my boys Score, Erick Neutron, and The Spys they influence me every day and my little Volterra!!! Plus every dj to hit my HEIST stage!!!

Where do you hope to see yourself in 4 years?

4 YEARS . . . wow thats right around the corner, i hope to own my own Venue, Bar, Restaurant, or Nightclub so far in the last year I have made the greatest accomplishments I could ever imagine so its all tuff to say, but I really hope in the next 4 years I could give the public more then I give today and I would like to see my family and close friends all working together and living the easy life because times are hard in this world and I hope to help everyone who is close to me as much as I can. 4 years . . . man I also hope to see myself Guest performing at SENSATION WHITE haha!

Best part of being a heist resident?

Well, I'm not really a resident kinda just the owner haha, but speaking as if I was a resident and get the chance to spin every week man the best part about djing HEIST is looking over to the 1500-2000 screaming kids and being able to ask if they are having a good time and almost every single one of them shout back to me and raise there hands in the air for me! Also getting thank for providing THE HEIST thats always a big pat on the back and love the friends and fans of the heist!

Anything you want to say to your fans?

THANK YOU times a billion katrillion babilliontillion, I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU GUYS, thank you for the pictures, for the waves hello, thank you for the screaming and dancing when i drop your favorite song, thank you for the comments and the adds on myspace and thank you so much for the love and support and attending THE HEIST!!!

Dj name and why?

I love to kick the shit out of an opponent in any type of competitive situation. From a game of checkers to a game of pick up basketball. This unhealthy hunger for victory lead to the inspiration for my dj name.

So go ahead.... try me.

What influenced you to become a dj?

Before deciding to start djing no one single dj influenced me more than Q-bert and Dj Am, great battle style artists. In the electronic scene the Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk really set some huge milestones with the records they produced.

If you're on xbox live add me, teacher score.

Who are your biggest influences?

In life, my dad has to take that award. He's the typical hard working first generation father with a big heart and love for all his kids.

Musically, I'm influenced by everyone I'm exposed to, from Steve Angello to Kanye West to the Jonas brothers. =) Here's some tidbit information about me, the first audio cassette I ever purchased was The Fugees - The Score ... hmmm coincidence?

Where do you hope to see yourself in 4 years?

I hope to be sharing the stage with deadmau5 and all the heist residents. Four years from now seems like a really long time, I hope I've lost my addiction for midget wrestling by then. Maybe a new wallet would be nice, with a compartment for poisonous star fish. I want a choco-cat tattoo and hopefully the whole world will have unlimited free hi speed wi fi.

Best part of being a heist resident?

I get to represent something everyone loved to hate and no one gave a chance. I've been resident since day one and I've been there to see the Heist go from less then 50 people a night to what it is now. Even if it was les then 50 people, somehow we always managed to have the best time of our life. Now the environment has multiplied ten folds with great music, and I get to share it with the best group of friends ever.

Anything you want to say to your fans?

Sorry to all the people who had to call in sick friday morning, I'd love to meet anyone and everyone, here's the screen name (naz emo kidd) and my website iamscore.com, where you can find all my new music. Please drop me a line and I hope to see everyone next Thursday.

the spys

DJ name and why?

NICK:
The name "the Spys" was created back when the Heist was at the Airliner and was originally "Spy v Spy". It was fitting because, similar to the Spys in the Spy v Spy cartoons, Dallas and I are constantly fighting and/or harassing each-other. We have been longtime friends and the constant torture that we inflict is all out of good fun. It's true aim is to push the Spys to do bigger and better things. As a Dj duo we are constantly trying to out do each-other, with the purpose and ultimate end goal of providing an amazing experience for any audience that stands before us.

DALLAS:
d.los came from a nickname I had at Starbucks when I was empolyed with the company. . .oddly enough the other SPY gave it to me. . .go figure. We chose The Spys because Nick and I have the strangest Love/Hate relationship.

It's kind of like we want to kill each other all the time but in a way that is out of love. . .I think. He is pretty cute. The first night we played together started with us going song for song and maybe 3 songs in we were raging the lounge at the Airliner.

Our main goal is to have fun, like the old Spys did in MAD comics. They fought each other, but only to have fun. Or get the grey Spy. . .she was HOT!!!

What influenced you to become a dj?

NICK:
My dad had a great influence on me becoming a Dj. When I was a kid we would play records on Saturdays and just hang out at the house. He helped inspire and create my deep love for music. I had always wanted to touch or scratch the record but was sure that if I did my dad would yell at me. As i grew up I listened to all sorts of music. Punk, Reggae, Ska, Soul, and eventually found Trance music, which i fell in love with. When I was in high-school I started making little beats and mash-ups for fun. Soon after I purchased my first set of CJs and began Dj-ing my friends backyard parties. I then started trowing my own parties, bought a pair of turntables and finally got to scratch records. Its been over 6 years since I started making and spinning music and I don't see an end in sight.

DALLAS:
I was producing tracks before I became a DJ, and listening to some of the talent floating around LA at that time just gave Nick and I the idea of becoming DJs.

We thought that nobody was having fun in the club scene, so we wanted to bring that element into LA.

Looking back its funny how we became such good friends with so many of our influences. See below..

Who are your biggest influences?

NICK:
Musically, my biggest influences are artists like Chemical Brothers (It Doesn't Matter is one of the sickest tracks ever!), The Faint, Funkagenda, Miles Dyson, Pink Floyd, James Brown, Sublime and SO SO SO many more! There is no way to even begin to name influences. I feel that every song i have ever heard has influenced me one way or another and to have to pick and choose i could go on forever. My Dj influences are equally as difficult to choose but if i had to choose: EROL ALKAN is my favorite dj, Armin van Burren has an AMAZING LIVE SHOW, and Hyphy Crunk showed me how NOT to run Doubles. Kidding. I have had the opportunity to see some of the best djs and producers in the world and i have taken something out of each experience, I feel very lucky.

DALLAS:
The first time I saw Steve Aoki play a set I was in awe. . .he is such a rockstar. I loved the energy that he brought to the clubs. Justice too looked like they were having fun back in the day. I guess I just wanted to RAGE. Hehe. Now, I love watching acts like Above and Beyond, Armin, Klaas, Hyphy, Score, Neutron, Deadmau5, Jimmy Boy, Paparazzi, Joaquin, and all my good friends who know how to rock the decks. . .I guess I try to take a little from everyone, because we are all so different. Its interesting to me to try to use tricks I see all my friends use. That is what I consider lawsuit material, but we could use the term "influence".

Where do you hope to see yourself in 4 years?

NICK:
In 4 years I see The Spys releasing another album, traveling the world playing shows and still rocking to the BEST AUDIENCES IN THE WORLD here in LOS ANGELES. Four years is a long time, but i see only good things in the future. We work hard to provide a positive club experience and in 4 years i dont think that will change one bit and can only get better.

DALLAS:
Hopefully still breathing. Maybe the HEIST at the Sports Arena??? Hahahahaha. . .no but really, I am focusing on production, a live act, and building a better future. So hopefully in 4 years, the SPYS will be playing parties like SENSATION, EDC, or playing clubs like I heart Techno. Damn, I am so excited now. . .stupid questions got me thinking how fun things are going to be..

Best part of being a heist resident?

NICK:
The best part of being a Heist resident is that fact that i have been able to see it grow in to one of the most dominant and amazing clubs in Souther California. The Heist is a family and being a resident has locked me into one of the most fun groups of people I have met in my life. We work hard to create an amazing club and each week we get to play for the most fun audience I have ever played for. The Best part of being a Heist resident is that I GET TO PLAY THE HEIST EVERY WEEK!!!! I LOVE THIS CLUB, THE FAMILY AND THE AUDIENCE SO MUCH!!! THANK YOU!

DALLAS:
WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THE HEIST?!?!?!? My friends, my fans, my club. I feel so much ownership in the HEIST that it is almost scary. We really are blessed to have such a wonderful thing going. . .so I guess I love everything about being a HEIST resident.

Anything you want to say to your fans?

NICK:
THANK YOU for making sandstorm the HEIST ANTHEM and always supporting the heist and the spys. we love you ALL!

DALLAS:
Like I said on my birthday, I/we do this just for you. Without you guys SPYS, HEIST, myself would be NOTHING. So in short, THANK YOU EVERYBODY for making Thursday nights my reason for existing. I LOVE YOU ALL!!! Keep on RAGING!!! =]

Dj name and why?

Back in High School, I was a big geek. I wore glasses, honors classes, I was a part of ASB, the whole nine yards. But you could never tell because of the group of friends I surrounded myself with. So one day of hanging out with the boys, we were ripping on eachother as usual and someone said I look like Jimmy Neutron's brother. It was an instant hit!!! it just stuck with me and it eventually led to being my Dj name.

What influenced you to become a dj?

When I first started, I had no intentions of becoming a Dj, I just thought it was cool to manipulate music with you bare finger tips. I didn't buy into the cool aaspect of it, I just found it interesting. But as I continued to practice, Mark, whos equipment i was using at the time, told me that I had a real knack for it and should continue spinning.

I picked it up real fast due to my interest. I would also have to say my brother as well because he taught me so much about music. he took me to the eight kid syndrome where I appreciated alot more music that was before my time. that gave my music love rooting to its history

Who are your biggest influences?

Now I do look at other Djs that definitely grab my eye. A-Trak first comes time because he does alot more than djing but also has the skills to back up his credentials. Jazzy Jeff Live is amazing. I can't say any newcomers right now because I have alot more respect for djs that used to haul crates of records and used stickers to mark cue point.

Where do you hope to see yourself in 4 years?

Definitely more behind the scenes. Advisement has always been my thing. I've seen different types of people work in this club circuit so it great to learn from experience and then share wisdom. Thats the type of guy I have always been. Its really hard to say because we are all young and live double lives, balancing family, school, work, and play all at once. Dj wise, most likely producing tracks and traveling more.

Best part of being a heist resident?

The energy!!!!! Heist has chemistry with its audience, something very rare in a weekly club. the love and support we get is uncanny.

Anything you want to say to your fans?

???I have fans??? - thank you so much for all the love.... its great talking to all of you and getting to know you personally!!! XOXO

volterra

hyphy crunk | dj score | the spys
dj erick neutron | back to the top

Dj name and why?

I got the name Volterra from a chapter in the book "New Moon". I've read all the Twilight books and have become a big fan of the series. I decided to call myself Volterra because I liked how it sounded and of course big fan of the Twiligt.

What influenced you to become a Dj?

I've always been around the party scene since I was 8 because my dad was a Dj and he would teach me and take me to his gigs and partys he had and I would watch and enjoy the dance music and would watch the crowd react to every different song that would be played. From that is where I gained my interest to be a dj. Music is my true love and passion. As time past, before becoming a dj, I was producing music for indie rock artists and writing lyrics for them. I also produced my own music and eventually came out with a demo that circulated through iTunes.

I always had the love for the stage and sharing my music with everyone. When I turned 18 and was able to hit the clubs I started to regain my interest for djing. I got back on the tables and practiced as much as I could did small parties with my friend Nery and started getting booked for clubs and soon enough become a Heist resident.

Who are your biggest influences?

I would have to say my biggest influences would have to have been my dad and my uncle. I always loved watching them mix and gettting the crowd hyped. I can't forget my boys Hyphy Crunk,Score, Erick Neutron, and The Spys they were also a big part of why I wanted to become a dj.

Where do you hope to see yourself in 4 years?

In four years I hope to being doing what I love and that's working with music as a full time job whether it be producing tracks, touring with my favorite bands, or djing the hottest nightclubs.

Best part of being a heist resident?

The crowd! Out of every place I've djed Heist is my most favorite place. The crowd gets into it and gives you soo much love back its an incredible feeling. I also love working with my friends that have now become my family and a big part of my life I would do anything for them <3

Anything you want to say to your fans?

Thank you for all the love and support you guys give me every Thursday. <3
